The contents of your red-lid landfill bin go to our landfill site at the Central Waste Facility, Wolumla. Accepted items: ✅ Items and packaging labelled compostable or biodegradable ✅ Takeaway coffee cups ✅ Pyrex, mirrors, ceramics and broken glass ✅ Soft plastics, cling film and bubble wrap ✅ Clothing and textiles ✅ Nappies and wipes ✅ Pet waste, including kitty litter ✅ Polystyrene foam ✅ Toys and other hard plastic items ✅ General household waste Items NOT accepted in the landfill bin: ❌ Aerosol cans, full or part-full* ❌ Building or demolition waste, asbestos ❌ Car batteries* ❌ Chemicals ❌ Electronic waste ❌ Fire extinguishers* ❌ Food scraps and garden waste (unless you do not have a FOGO service) ❌ Gas cylinders* ❌ Household batteries* ❌ Motor and cooking oils* ❌ Paint* ❌ Sharps and medical waste ❌ Smoke detectors* *These items can be disposed of for FREE at our Community Recycling Centre. Tips: * Usable goods and materials such as bikes, gas BBQ's, lawn mowers, furniture and building materials can be separated and taken to our Reuse Shopsso they can be reused and not end up in landfill (accepted at staff discretion). * Scrap metal and clean cardboard (up to 1 cubic metre) can be disposed of at Waste and Recycling Centres free of charge for residents (excludes business waste). * 140 litre red-lid landfill bins are provided as a standard size for household waste that cannot be recycled. Council also has 80 litre and 240 litre landfill bins (fees apply). Placing your bins out: * Place bins out the night before collection, at the kerb or roadside with the opening to the road. * Keep bins 0.5 metre apart and at least 2 metres away from obstructions like parked cars and trees. * Make sure the bin lid can shut - overfilled bins may not be emptied. * If you're struggling to pull the bin, it may be too heavy for the truck to life and empty (80kg limit). * Bring bins back to your property as soon as possible after collection. Don't bag your recycling! Please do not place your recycling in plastic bags. Recycling in plastic bags is contamination and goes straight to landfill. The code shows the type of plastic that the product is made of. Unfortunately, these codes can be confusing and misleading, and we ask you to ignore them as a reference to what can and cannot go in the recycling bin. Check The Australasian Recycling Label system for a reliable way to identify if a product or product part is recyclable instead. Tips: * DO NOT bag your recycling or place plastic bags in your yellow-lidded recycle bin. Recyclable materials in plastic bags cannot be processed and may mean the contents of your entire recycling bin ends up going to landfill. * Flatten large cardboard boxes, but do not jam boxes in the recycling bin – they will get stuck and it may not empty. * Keep glass bottles whole. Broken glass should be placed in your red-lid landfill bin. * Make sure items are EMPTY - no need to wash, just give them a rinse out. * Lids larger than a credit card can be placed in your recycling bin separately. * Household 240 litre yellow lid bins are provided as a standard size for recycling and are collected on a fortnightly basis. You're recycling isn't going to landfill, the truck has split chambers. FOGO bins are collected every week. Accepted items: ✅ Cooked and raw food waste, including fruit, vegetables, bread rice, pasta, coffee grounds and loose leaf tea ✅ Meat, bones and seafood, including oyster shells ✅ Small branches (less than 50mm diameter) ✅ Grass clippings and accepted weeds (not all weeds are accepted, see below for details) ✅ Plant and shrub prunings ✅ Flowers and leaves ✅ Certified compostable caddy liners - look for the Australian Standars AS 4736 and seedling logo Items NOT accepted in the FOGO bin: ❌ Artificial flowers and plants ❌ Cardboard and paper ❌ Compostable or biodegradable labelled items and packaging ❌ Dead animals ❌ Fruit and vegetable stickers ❌ Garden equiptment ❌ Human or animal hair ❌ Kitty litter and pet waste ❌ Logs, stumps, treated timber and sawdust ❌ Nappies and wipes, even if labelled compostable ❌ Paper towels and tissues ❌ Pizza boxes and cardboard takeaway food containers ❌ Plant pots ❌ Rocks and soil ❌ Sharps and medical waste ❌ Tea bags Not all weeds can be disposed of in your FOGO bin Any high risk weeds listed within the South East Regional Strategic Weed Management Plan 2023–2027 or as a State Priority Weedby DPI are prohibited from being placed in your FOGO bin. These weeds should not be transported and must be destroyed on-site to prevent their spread (many invasive species can spread vegetatively from plant parts, not just from seeds).
